1) Compare and contrast the representation of teenagers in the two texts.


In the trailer for Skins teenagers are representation negatively, as they are being portrayed in a negative and rebellious manner. This is signified in the opening montage which showcases teenagers smoking, having sex and relationships with the same and opposite sex. Close up and mid-shots are used to emphasis on this point. They are shown to be careless and often labelled as trouble makers by adults. This trailer may often split the audiences; as such behaviour can result in moral panic by the adults. Some believe that teenagers can be influenced by what they see on TV, for example the teenagers having underage sex and smoking can influence those who watch it, by picking up such habit themselves. This links back to the moral panic as teenagers no longer listen to what they are told and do what they want to do regardless of what their parents say. Such programme can have the oppositional reading in ways which the adults think that this helps to promote such rebellious behaviour, which is often reflected on society.

Although some teenagers may think that such behaviour is a path way to freedom; the adults may therefore gain negative ideologies about teenagers. This can often lead to adults stereotyping and labeling teenagers as the same, for example hoodies related to gangs, short skirts related to whores.

On the other hand, in the video game trailer for Bully teenager also represented negatively. The bullies are stereotyped, in this is signified in the way they are dressed, for example, they are wearing their shirt tucked out, low bottoms, and a messy look in general as this helps to define their troublesome characteristic. The shots and camera angel’s emphasis their troubled characteristic behaviours when they are harassing school kids and causing distress to others. Long and medium shots are used to show the mise-en-scene and close up shots are used to emphasis on their social expressions and body language.

The younger audience may accept this type of behaviour as they are desensitized to this and normal, however the much older audience may have oppositional reading to this text, as it contains unacceptable violence and disruptive behaviours. Those ideologies are constantly being reproduced through media texts such as violence video games, movies and other characters in other text. This is a negative representation of teenagers, as those ideologies are injected into the audience and this leads to stereotyping and labelling of certain groups of teenagers.

Therefore across both texts, teenagers are negatively represented as being rebellious and typical trouble makers. Those negative representations of teenagers in both text may result in a moral panic, as those behaviours are being accepted and perfumed by teenagers themselves, however those ideologies of teenagers bullying younger kids and having relationships with the same sex, which often leaves adults wondering and worried about the way teenagers are brought up and question how society deal with such representation of teenagers. Both texts reflect those negative representations.

Net-Neutrality

What is net neutrality?
Net neutrality is when Internet service providers allow all access to the Internet and don't
restrict particular websites or how fast users can connect to them. This mean they should be all at the same speed and same level of connection.

Is the Internet neutral?
No, I don’t think the Internet is neutral but it’s at its best performance, therefore some may say it’s as neutral as it will ever be.

Should it be?
Yes. I think all Internet service providers should provide everyone with a neutral network to those who pay the same amount and want the same speed. However if Internet users don't like it, there are other Internet service providers.

New and Digital Media!

“Digital media have, in many ways, changed how we consume media products” Who do you think benefits the most- audiences or producers?

The revolution of new and digital media has changed the way society has formed in the 21st century era. The changing face of new technology has allowed new and digital media to reach its highest revolution with a great success of online community on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter growing daily with millions joining social networking sites every second. Due to the impact of new and digital media there had been a decline in other media platform such as the print industry including magazine, newspapers,articles and books.

The power of new and digital media has given audiences and producers many ways of consuming and producing news such as through citizen journalism and crowd sourcing which provides a pluralistic model for audiences as the audience play an active role in providing information for producers. This signifies the fact that audiences are no longer passive consumers but also active producers of their own media products.

Through this people have seeing a great rise in UGC (user generated content) which allows audiences to contribute in making media text as UGC has replaced old forms of media such as newspapers and letters even though those forms are still around, they don't seem to be as appealing to today's audience then they did 10 years ago.For example through the use smart phones and various other devices audiences are able to make and showcase their own news report about event such as the G20 protest, when an officer, from the Metropolitan Police’s Territorial Support Group (TSG), collapsed at his home after realizing he was the person captured on film allegedly pushing newspaper seller Ian Tomlinson to the ground. Mr Tomlinson, 47, is thought to have died of a heart attack. This is clear proof that new applications such as Facebook and Twitter make it increasingly possible for individual journalists to publish outside the constraints of their newspapers and website and develop direct relationships with communities of readers as social networking sites have given audience the power to publish,update and create news texts for millions of readers to see without the need to ask produces or journalists to do as as the citizen journalism's has increased. Other examples consist of the earthquake in Japan, where is shows how people have captured the moment when disaster struck Japan killing thousands. Audiences therefore are able to comment,arguer for and against any media text published and captured by ordinary people on their smart phones such as the iPhone.

It is arguable to say whether audience or produces are benefit the most from consuming media product through the use of new and digital media. Some people may say that social networking sites has given audience the power of freedom to speak out,protest for and against things they may or may not believe in, as the use of social networking sites have allowed audiences to promote and express their feelings through application such as uploading pictures, videos, fan pages and applications that target a wide age range.

All though the online community has given the audience of freedom of speech,Social networking sites have isolated us from ‘real human interaction in a cyber-reality that is a poor imitation of the real world. This fact was identified by Sherry Turkle’s article in the Guardian. It also shows how people of to days generation spend less times interacting in person as statistics shows that 57% of people talk more online than the traditional way of communicating e.g face to face. This shows that people have become more dependent on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to communicate with friends and family, the break down of society can linked to the significant use age of the Internet and social networking sites. Audiences spend more than 5 hours interacting online everyday which can suggest how ‘technology is threatening to dominate our lives and make us less human’. Also according to Sherry Turkle " the future of books are blurred" suggesting that audiences are no loner interested in readying like they used to 10-15 years ago, especial the young audiences of today who read and consume news and gossip through the use of social networking rather then reliable sources such as BBC news.

As well as the positive impact of new and digital media, there are many negatives aspects surrounding social networking site such as privacy concerts,identity fraud,child pornography ect.
In addition, producers can benefit from advertising on websites as well as social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, where adverts are tailored to the audiences' interests. All adverts are created to suit the users interest in order to appeal the them. Producers are able to promote produces by advertising it on social networking such as Facebook and Twitter in exchange to make profit for their own company and institution. However overall i think audiences benefit from the use of new and digital media more then the producers are they gain more UGC and convergence through new applications and technological devices.

iPad2 tablet unveiled by Steve Jobs:

Apple boss Steve Jobs has returned from indefinite sick leave to declare 2011 "the year of the iPad2".

Mr Jobs is on medical leave from the company and there was much speculation over whether he would take centre stage at the highly-anticipated launch of the new tablet.

Describing the iPad2 design as "completely new", Mr Jobs made a 30-minute presentation at the YBCA Theatre in San Francisco, which was broadcast live via video link in London.

Calling the new device "beautiful", he said: "We think 2011 is clearly going to be the year of iPad2. It is going to be everywhere in the month of March."

Despite rumours that the iPad2 may come in a smaller size, the new tablet will keep its original dimensions. It does, however, boast a sleeker and slimmer design than its predecessor, measuring 33% less in thickness.

Mr Jobs said: "One of the most startling things about the iPad2 is it is dramatically thinner. It feels totally different."

It will also be lighter, weighing in at 1.3lb, 0.2lb lighter than the iPad1. "You can just pick this thing up, it almost floats," Mr Jobs said.

The tablet will be available in both black and white rather than its previous single-colour design. The iPad2 will also be faster than its predecessor, with a new dual processor making it twice as quick and nine times faster in its graphics performance.

Mr Jobs put rumours of a price increase to rest, revealing that the tablet can be purchased in the US for the same price as the iPad1. "We are going to keep the same exact prices as the current iPad but you get a dramatically improved product," Mr Jobs said.

Among other new accessories, the sleek redesign of the iPad cover raised eyebrows. With a magnetic grasp attaching to the tablet, the cover provides a book-like front to the iPad and comes in 10 colours.

30 million Facebook users in UK:

The number of Facebook accounts held in the UK has reached 30 million, around half the population of the country.

The milestone is an increase of four million from the number of registered UK users last July.

Vice president of Facebook Europe Joanna Shields told a conference in London that the company was "really excited" about now having 30 million active users, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Facebook, which was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, has more than 500 million active users around the world, meaning those users who have logged in during the past 30 days.

Half of the website's users log in on any given day, with a total of more than 700 billion minutes spent a month on the site - the equivalent of 1.3 million years. The average user has 130 friends and will create 90 items of content every month.
The website employs more than 2,000 people and can even now claim to be Oscar-nominated, following the critical acclaim for The Social Network, a film about Facebook.

The mutualisation of news

“Gone are the days of "us and them" journalism”, suggests that there is no longer any different between the audience and the journalists with the increasing level of normal people becoming “citizen journalists”. The use of new and digital media has given the audiences the power to produce their own media product and level up with the journalists, according to Editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger, now our journalists and readers as equal partners.

"The mutualisation of news is a very powerful idea that particularly works for the Guardian, as our relationship with our readers is very strong. We can use the community of our readers in ways we would not have been able to in the past."

Rusbridger says that in order to make the members feel involved and more interested, the Guardian should build trust by behaving like the old-style mutual building societies. The web has led to a news community where ideas and news are shared rather than delivered, as new and digital media has become more accessible through the use of the Internet world wide. He also suggests that, "By continuing to go down this route, we will be more diverse and genuinely more plural than other media organizations and create a huge external resource. We need to continue breaking down the perceptions of a remote journalist who is a preacher, living distantly, and newspapers as being in bed with power and on the side of power, rather than the reader.

Rusbridger believes that new applications such as Twitter make it increasingly possible for individual journalists to publish outside the constraints of their newspapers and website and develop direct relationships with communities of readers.

An example of this would be Guardian journalist Jemima Kiss, who had more than 12,000 followers on Twitter in June 2009 and uses them to get help in researching stories, this method can also be referred to as “Crowd sourcing”, as Jemima uses all the information she gets from the crowed and makes news out of it as they often bombard her with all the information she needs. It represents a blurring of the lines between journalism and readers. She says: you help me with researching this story and I will let you know when it is ready.

". The Guardian technology pod had 682,000 followers on Twitter in June 2009, which is nearly twice as large as the number of people who buy the Guardian every day. The idea of journalists publishing directly is no longer shocking to the audience or publishers. "The way we tend to work is that there are always early adopters of these new technologies, and it works best when individual journalists who have a passion for it, use and explore it says Rusbridger.An example of this is that the Guidelines has gone online for Twitter. "These are a general common-sense guide rather than being prescriptive."

The policeman suspended over the death of a G20 protester in London has been signed off sick - following a suspected heart attack. Alan Rusbridger says: "At the heart of this story was reporter Paul Lewis doing what a traditional reporter should do. The death of Tomlinson raised barely a mention in the other media. The official police version was that he died of a heart attack while they were trying to rescue him under a hail of bottles.


Paul Lewis (Gaurdian) doubted this online and this helped to raised qquestions in the paper and also on Twitter, which as a result led the people to look through their cameras and mobiles in order to catch the killer of Mr Tomlinson, as this is where the power of the crowd comes in and a fund manager from New York realized he had captured the assault on Tomlinson and it was an extremely dramatic piece of film.


In some cases “citizen journalists or “Crowd sourcing” is not as important, however in the case of the G20 protests, this seemed to be the most important part and it shows that sometimes a footage can be more important than it first seemed.

6.How have the audience responded to the changes? is there more customer choice is there evidence of a more pluralistic model? what evidence do you have to support this?

Pluralistic Model is evidenced through the use of social networking site, as more audiences of a certain age group or ethnic background seem to be joining Facebook and Twitter, for example now celebrity use this as a form of promotion and fame, celeb’s such as the Justine Bieber, Katie Price. Many more new artists or singer use social networking sites such as Myspace to promote themselves, as it helps with self-discovery and then move onto Facebook as it has a much wider audience, they can also get with the showbiz and be-friends themselves with celebrity’s and pop stars on Twitter.

The audience response to this change as created more revaluation in the media industry as more and more famous people or even ordinary people use social networking as a methods of self-fame and there are more customer choice and freedom of speech, whereas before networking sites where just simply used for socialising and keeping in contact with friends.

Pluralism means a condition in which numerous distinct ethnic, religious, or cultural groups are present and tolerated within a society and this is shown on social networking sites, for example users join groups whether it’s a religious, celeb, famous, geek, funny, sad group, this can divide people in to little social community where within the social site different people joins group of area of interests and this is tolerated and accepted, as it allow people to share interest, exchange ideas and information about something or someone online.

5. Who are the primary target audience now and has this changed? Who was it before and how do you know?

The primary audiences of facebook used to be university student, with 85% being collage students as the founder of Facebook made it to use for university uses without acknowledging that it will soon be used world wide and now it has changed massively, as more and more audiences are able to accuse and join social networking sites at the ages of 13+.

In the past the age range used to start roughly from 18-24 but now the age range has expanded and social networking g site users are increasing daily as more and more people are interacting and socializing through Facebook and Twitter rather than face to face which used to by the traditional way, now audiences can range from 13-50. The different types of applications appeal to different needs of the audiences. On average 6 hours or more is spend on Facebook per day compared to Japan who spend 2 hours and 50 mins. Twitter users also spend 4-5 hours per day, however the amount of time spend on social networking sites depends on the individuals needs and uses.

4. Is the size of the audience any different now than before the impact of new and digital media (or has the pattern of usage changed)?

There is a high increase of social networking user; there is a rise of 58.5% in the last year. The highest audience users are between the ages of 18-24. However the age range has expanded and children who are 12 can have Facebook. Social networking sites have become extremely popular amongst young audience. However Facebook and Twitter do have older audiences, celebrities are also hooked onto to the social networking culture.

This is because there are more applications made available, such as games, video links ect,. UK audience spends roughly about 6 hours on Facebook per day compared to Japan who spend only 2 hours and 50 minutes. However Myspace did not become as successful as Facebook and Twitter, as the new revaluation new and digital media aloowed Facebook, to get their audience hooked to its new technological advances which the social networking site had to offer with many new and creative applications which applied to the Target audience more than Myspace, who was owned by Fox Interactive Media which is owned by News Corporation, but according to comScore, MySpace was overtaken internationally by its main competitor, Facebook, in April 2008, based on monthly unique visitors, as a result it failed to rise to fame, even though Myspace was the very first social networking site to allow people to communicate and interact alongside Bebo.

However now Myspace has changed to music site allowing people to downloads and share files, it is more of an entertainment site rather than social networking site. The new and digital media has had a great impact on the way user use social networking site as the technological advances have allowed audience to make the most of the applications. Social networking site are constantly updating and upgrading their sites to keep up with the constant changes that take place due to development of technology and the rise in demand of change. This is aimed to make the sites easier for the users. The latest development are that Facebook, Twitter, myspcace and instant messaging can be accessed through the use of smart phone.

This suggests that through the use of smart phones and new convergence such as iphone, ipad, blackberry ect , people are using their phones to accessed social networking sites and there has been a rise by 112% for Facebook users, this is implying that this type of convergence is popular amongst today’s audiences.

According to statistics Facebook and Twitter have a much higher demand than Myspace as they are the most popular social networking sits. With Facebook having over 6oo million users at the start of January 2011 and Twitter with 190 million users. Whereas MySpace only has just a few thousands users. This clearly shows that Facebook and Twitter are the most used social networking sites. All the sites offer free signing up, which makes it more applying to the audience.

Everything is online!!!!
Audiences have more control over what they view and how they use social networking site whether its for promotion or personal use such as interacting with friends and family, as this allows the to share,exchange and gain knowledge about the latest news all over the world. Audince have more power over what they consume and what they don't.

In today’s generation and mediated culture, people have adapted the idea of becoming much more dependent on social networking sites and relying on the Internet for activities such as socializing, arranging meetings, business promotions ect which would have been done in person years ago, however everyone seems to be so busy with their lives these days, they don’t have the time to socialize face to face anymore and therefore find it easier to interact and contact others via networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, the dependency on the Internet had made is more accessible to use as it suits each individual’s life style. According to Sherry Turkle we are: “ Under the illusion of allowing us to communicate better, it is actually isolating us from real human interactions in a cyber- reality is a poor imitation of the real world”


Whilst Evgeny Morozov seems to think the more people use social networking get lazier and less reliable people will get. “Social media has bred a generation of "slacktivists". It has made people lazy and enshrined the illusion that clicking a mouse is a form of activism equal to real world donations of money and time". This emphasises on the negative impact social networking has on society and the young generation of today. This is suggested by ‘The online Sub- Life’ (Guardian) “ MySpace has been sucked into its own black hole recently, cutting 500 employees and admitting that they’re no longer battling binary codes with Facebook”.

This can also suggest that people are forgetting to communicate in the traditional way as websites and the reach engine can be accessed anywhere anytime suitable to the person and their needs, for example the Internet can be accessed on new smart phones, laptops, computers etc. As Marshall McLuhan said: "The future of the book is the blur", implying that because as technological advance people are less readying more newspapers and book like the old fashioned way. This has also had a big impact on how people communicate, “Traditional courtship has been negatively impacted via online dating by removing the element of conversation”. This clearly suggests that even though new and digital media has had a changing effect on how people use the Internet and social networking but it has its negative aspects on society as well.

Social networking sites have change the way people communicate and interact, through the use of new and digital media.Social networking has become a community of its own online,with thousands joining social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter everyday, which has developed dramatically over the last 5-10 years.As a result the growing cutler of social networking has had a great impact on other institutions such print,newspaper and adverting.

Facebook: The founder of Facebook was Zuckerberg in February 2004 whilst he was studying at Harvard. Facebook has over 1,700 employees and offices in 12 countries. With users reaching a sky high 0f 600 million by the start of 2011 as seers may create a personal profile, add other users as friends and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school, or college, or other characteristics. Mark Zuckerberg owns 24% of the company share, Accel Partners owns 10%, Digital Sky Technologies owns 10%, Dustin Moskovitz owns 6%, Eduardo Saverin owns 5%, Sean Parker owns 4%, Peter Thiel owns 3%, Greylock Partners and Meritech Capital Partners own between 1 to 2% each, Microsoft owns 1.3%, Li Ka-shing owns 0.75%, the Interpublic Group owns less than 0.5%, a small group of current and former employees and celebrities own less than 1% each, celebrity's such as Matt Cohler, Jeff Rothschild, Adam D'Angelo, Chris Hughes, and Owen Van Natta, while Reid Hoffman and Mark Pincus have sizable holdings of the company, and the remaining 30% or so are owned by employees, an undisclosed number of celebrities, and outside investors. Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey in July 2006, soon after the setup twitter had over millions of users, Twitter is used by many celebrities who promote and advertise their materials, celebrities such as Rihanna, Kim kardashin, Katie price ect. Auden ice and fans also join twitter as it has a highly star appeal to it. To to days generations starts such as Justin Bieber have increased the amount of fans joining twitter as he appeals to the younger gradations between the ages of 12-16. Williams took over the role of CEO, and Dorsey became chairman of the board. On October 4, 2010, Williams announced that he was stepping down as CEO. Dick Costolo, formerly Twitters chief operating officer, became CEO. Twitter currently Have more than 340 employees and this amount is growing.

In order to expand their insinuation, Microsoft has developed twitter micro-blogging service for business and advertising. The Research Office Talk, which is still not a finished product that Microsoft would find out, let’s use the benefits of “social media” in companies without the associated risks. This plan has been setup especially for the younger people in business so that they don’t miss out when working on the possibilities of Web 2.0 and Social Media. Many companies therefore make concessions, sometimes there are no clear rules. These involve social media offerings such as “Facebook” and “Twitter” risks to the safety of technical systems and trade secrets. About Social Media, information quickly with the wrong people divided, whether by accident or because of lack of awareness.

Myspace: ( the down fall)

MySpace was founded by: Tom Anderson in July 2003. MySpace was once used by thousands of teenagers, before the development of Facebook which as a result damaged the success of MySpace which only lived for a short amount; as a result MySpace lost a great deal of fans and user as Facebook offered a better service and more power for users to create their own profiles, share and exchange ideas ect.

According to sherly turkel there is no sign of anyone deleting or remove their profiles on social networking site: "Lets face it, i see no sign of anyone unplugging". this shows that then grow of social networking is not slowing down any time soon as more and more people join everyday. Myspace institution and the company become powerless after the growth of Facebook and Twitter.
